Balance is something most people take for granted and nobody knows that more than Chris Henry of Palmer Township. For the last few years she has had serious problems with her balance and couldn't get much help from doctors. "It's not frustrating, it's devastating," she said. "I have to hold the wall all the time because when you walk you feel like walking on a cloud," she recalled about what it used to be like for her.

When John Klimkiewicz, MD, signed on as an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sport injuries at Georgetown University Hospital three years ago, he essentially became the team physician for the 670 athletes that make up all of the university's varsity teams. In addition, he has a full practice of patients, which includes seeing as many as 140 patients a week and performing about 400 surgical cases a year.

This is all part of being on the team at one of the top sports medicine programs in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The majority of patients seen by Dr. Klimkiewicz and the hospital's outpatient physical therapists are between 20 and 50 years old. And these athletes are "looking to get back to 100% as quickly as possible," Dr. Klimkiewicz said. "They are young, aggressive, Type-A people. They're not going to accept take two Advil, and take two months off." >>

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there were up to 258,000 hospital admissions for hip fractures among people aged 65 and older in 2010. It is estimated that by 2030, the number of hip fractures will reach 289,000, which is an increase of 12%.

Most hip fractures in the elderly are caused by falls or trauma to the hip. Geriatric patients with osteoporosis are at a greater risk of hip fracture in the event of a fall.  Medical conditions and physical inactivity are among the other factors that contribute to hip fractures among older people. >>

He has also presented and published many abstracts, articles, and book chapters that have used isokinetics in testing, rehabilitation or training techniques.

Davies presented in the two workshops focused on Application of Isokinetic Testing and Rehabilitation (one workshop focused on the Shoulder Complex and the other on the Knee, using an Integrated OKC and CKC Approach).

The presentations were followed by a practical demonstration and hands-on workshop featuring the pioneer in isokentic testing and rehab technology, the Biodex Multi-Joint System 4. >>

Wharton High School Training Facility Is Hidden Gem

September 19, 2011
Andy Warrener, New Tampa Patch

Tim Kocher with the System 4 ProThe Wharton Wildcats athletes and USF sports medicine students benefit from a state-of-the-art training facility at Wharton High School.

"We've been fortunate through the school's budget and through donations to acquire some great equipment," said Kocher.

Most notable of the devices in the facility is the Biodex Isokinetic and Rehab Machine, which, according to Kocher, "tests and helps rehab virtually every joint in the body.

"It measures how hard the muscles around a certain joint are working to perform basic movements. If we see that muscles around a certain injured joint are working harder than the muscles around the good side, we can determine if the player is ready to get back on the field or not," he said. >>

Dr. Chris Doyle at Planet Health is offering Biodex Isokinetic muscle testing to help provide clients with improved results and shorter recovery times. The new Biodex Isokinetic muscle testing is a great tool for patients who need a faster rehabilitation process, and also for patients who are undergoing therapy. The new technology applies to most athletes who suffered an injury and need a fast and instant check-up to find the root cause of the injury.

Biodex Isokinetic is for testing and rehabilitating muscle imbalances and deficiencies due to injury, improper training or post-surgery. It is imperative to overall performance in any sport or activity.

"It is an invaluable, objective tool to evaluate and specifically target rehab for muscle imbalance or weakness due to injury, or post-surgery," said Dr. Chris Doyle of Planet Health..... >>

Sizing up the best - The North Platte Telegraph

March 4, 2010
John Lindenberger

While the isokinetic dynamometer was originally designed for use by athletic trainers, he said it can also be beneficial for non-athletes who are undergoing physical therapy. He said the clinic has had its Biodex system for about 20 years now.

Over the years, they have upgraded the equipment to stay current with the latest technology. After seeing the machines in use at the NFL Combine, he feels that North Platte is lucky to have a unit like this available for patients.

"We are the only clinic in town that has one of these machines," he added. >>

Distinguish Yourself... Biodex Helps Keep Athletes in the Game Worldwide!

April 1, 2008
BIODEX PRESS RELEASE: Lila Corwin

Distinguish YourselfSoccer players are among the most amazing of athletes. Combining incredible skill, agility, strength and endurance during every match, they push themselves to the limits of physical capability – without using their hands. In so doing, however, they also place themselves in danger of injury on a regular basis.

"That's why we need a clinical staff of 12," jokes David Fevre, MSC, MCSP, SRP and Senior Physical Therapist for English Premier League Football (Soccer) Club, Blackburn Rovers, "Despite being in great shape - or maybe because they play so often at the extremes of their physical capabilities – injury is part of the game for elite soccer players. To help keep our 36 team members on the playing field we have a support staff that includes five chartered physiotherapists, three sports scientists, three massage therapists and a medical doctor. It's a pretty large staff, even by British Premier League Soccer standards. But we feel that the more we can keep our best players healthy, the better the chance we'll have to succeed. Fevre, who has served as a physical therapist for over 26 years, including a 14-year stint in the British Rugby Football League plus time at hospitals before joining Manchester United (1994-1999), incorporates an integrated approach to help keep his athletes from getting injured, and to get those who are hurt ready to return to action without significant risk of reinjury. He includes in his arsenal of exercise, weight training, nutritional education and sessions on equipment designed to improve muscular and cardiovascular strength and endurance such as cycles and treadmills.

"One piece of the equation I consider especially important is our Biodex Multi-Joint System," states Fevre. "I really like it for the isokinetic capability, but I use it in the other modes as well. It is very useful as an exercise-based rehabilitation tool. I was always taught that exercise is the most important part of physio, and this is one of the few machines with a plug that actually provides exercise modality."  >>
