Shirley, NY, September 28, 2012— Guillaume Moreau is a French race car driver who competes in the Le Mans Series, a European sports car racing endurance series.  From 2007 through 2011, he competed in five of the 24 Hour Le Mans races, with best results of seventh overall and second in class in one of the events. He shared the GT1 class championship with teammate Patrice Goueslard in the Le Mans Series in 2008.

Moreau’s plans to drive in this year’s race were shattered after a high-speed crash at Circuit de la Sarthe during the Le Mans Test Day on June 3^rd causing severe trauma to his spinal cord. He was transferred to a specialized unit at Angers Hospital, and taken under the care of the resuscitation team in the hospital’s Accident and Emergency surgery block and by the neurosurgery specialists who handle this type of trauma.  

After receiving two operations to reduce the pressure around the spinal cord, Moreau was transferred to Centre de lꞌArche in Le Mans for physical therapy to strengthen his muscles. The initial phase of rehabilitation began by using the Biodex Multi-Joint System 4 to evaluate Moreau’s muscle power. Based on the assessment provided by the system, he began an intensive, structured rehabilitation program. Every day Moreau would spend an hour on the Biodex System 4, to exercise his muscles; one day to strengthen his thighs, the next to strengthen his ankles. Not only did the physical therapists see progress first hand, but the data provided by the Biodex Multi-Joint System confirmed Moreau’s progress.

Moreau continued his rehabilitation for the next two-and-a-half months and has now returned to his home region of Le Limousin where he will begin a new phase of recovery at the CHU Limoges.  Guillaume’s speedy progress at Centre de lꞌArche prompted doctors to cut short his stay, allowing him to return home and enjoy everyday life while continuing daily rehabilitation.

Guillaume is now walking, although without full fluidity, driving his car and is even cycling. The majority of his muscles have recovered their full movement in the timeframe expected by the medical team after his second operation, and in some cases even faster. And while complete sensitivity has not yet returned, the recovery process is continuing to follow a logical course that offers much hope for the future.
