Recovering balance: Classes help seniors prevent falls

March 21, 2015
By Danie Koskan, Rapid City Journal Staff

Want to lead a well-balanced life? Put down the self-help and diet books and just try standing on one foot for a minute.

“If you can maintain a minute, you’re doing pretty well with balance,” said Erin Smith, wellness director at Westhills Village Retirement Community. If you wobble before time’s up, don’t panic. With age comes wisdom, white hair — and wobbles. “Unfortunately, as we age, our balance is one of the first things that we tend to lose,” Smith said.

The single-leg stance is one of the tools she uses to improve stability in her clients, most of whom are residents of the southside Rapid City retirement home. The rest are on a waiting list to move into the continuing care facility. >>

When fall risks are detected, therapists aided by software programs in the Balance System can, over a period of weeks, help patients develop the muscle strength and neurological response necessary for them to walk more safely when discharged. >>

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 4, 2014) – The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) today announced a five-year, $30 million national study of the effectiveness of a multi-pronged strategy that includes deploying nurses or nurse practitioners trained as “falls care managers” to provide older adults with individually tailored, evidence-based care plans to help them avoid falls and related injuries.

The award funded by PCORI and made by NIA as part of a first of its kind partnership between the nonprofit institute and the federal agency will support a uniquely patient-centered approach to reducing rates of fall-related injuries among non-institutionalized older adults. The study will be led by several of the country’s leading geriatric experts and conducted in collaboration with older individuals, family caregivers, and other stakeholder partners who will contribute to all phases of the research. Patients, stakeholders, nurses, and primary care physicians will play key roles as partners in implementing the tailored care approach.

Falls rank among the most common and potentially devastating problems facing the growing population of older adults and their families. Every year, roughly one in three adults over age 65 falls, and as many as 30 percent suffer moderate to severe injuries, which can lead to further declines in health and loss of independence. Rates of fall-related injuries remain stubbornly high despite research pointing to effective interventions. Among other challenges, many older patients are reluctant to disclose previous falls and only a third are screened for this problem during primary care visits. >>

Glenwood continually looks to improve its rehabilitation services with new techniques and technology.  One of the areas of focus for changing the image of the facility was the way the rehabilitation process was being viewed.  “We were looking to move away from passive therapy to active therapy,” explains Dave Merkley, Executive Director of Glenwood.  The decision was made to add the Biodex Balance System SD to their rehabilitation program as part of this move in a new direction.  >>

Linwood physical therapy center helps maturing bodies gain and maintain strength

LINWOOD – Eleanor Hagan spent 26 years in the Atlantic City casino industry. Starting as a bartender at Bally’s Park Place, Hagan moved on to become a floor person and then a dealer at the blackjack, roulette, poker and craps tables.

All the while, she had a second career in mind – one markedly different from the first. Studying nights, weekends, during her work breaks, and in countless stolen moments in between, Hagan worked toward her goal. In 2000, she earned her master’s degree in physical therapy at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. She was 50.

“People always said, ‘By the time you graduate, you’re going to be too old; who’s going to want to hire you?’” said Hagan. But her age worked in her favor, she said, giving her the single-mindedness to push past obstacles and the patience to deal effectively with challenged clients. >>
