APTA Combined Sections Meeting: Biodex Offers Trust Falls to Promote Safe Patient Handling and Mobility

BIODEX PRESS RELEASE: Lila Corwin

As safety of patients and physical therapists during treatment grows as a concern for therapy clinics and their administrators, medical equipment manufacturer, Biodex, is encouraging conversation about technological solutions with a Trust Fall Challenge.

February 8, 2018, Shirley NY – At this year’s American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) in New Orleans, Biodex Medical Systems, Inc. will be hosting a Trust Fall Challenge in the exhibit hall. Using new safe lifting and ambulation technology to “catch” participants as they fall back, Biodex seeks to spread the word about the importance of incorporating technology into safe patient handling and mobility programs.

Motorized Lift Assist and WalkerAt the center of the challenge is the Biodex Mobility Assist, a motorized stand-assist and walker in one that Biodex developed to help physical therapists achieve faster outcomes in a safe environment. APTA attendees are invited to the Biodex booth to strap into the Mobility Assist and fall back, trusting the sturdy frame and harness to keep them safe from injury as they would a patient while standing up or ambulating. Participants will earn a chance to win an iPad. Biodex’s Eric J. Farabaugh, MBA, MHA, PT, Vice President of Physical Medicine Sales, believes the overall message is much greater.

Safe Patient Handling and Mobility“Between patient safety and cost associated with worker injury, safe patient handling and mobility programs are becoming more and more vital,” says Farabaugh. “Physical therapists and administrators are looking for a practical, versatile solution they can implement today.”

OSHA agrees, citing years of research that shows relying on body mechanics and manual lifting techniques alone is not effective at reducing staff or patient injury. Mechanical devices not only help prevent patient falls, they can help patients feel more secure. This added security can lead to earlier therapy interventions and faster recovery.

Farabaugh adds, “We’re excited to be driving these discussions in such a creative, interactive way at CSM.”
